Helping Hands & Deep River Farm Hurricane Relief

Hurricane Helene Disaster Relief Effort

A low-pressure system struck the North Carolina mountains about a week before Hurricane Helene, bringing nearly nine inches of rain. Rivers and lakes filled to capacity, and the ground was left saturated. Four days later, on September 27, Hurricane Helene hit western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee, unleashing over 30 inches of rain. The deluge caused rivers to overflow, dams to break, and extensive mudslides—some stretching over two miles—devastated towns and communities. The storm took a tragic toll, with lives lost and many still unaccounted for.

In response, Midway Wesleyan Church launched Operation Mountain Relief to deliver aid to those in need. Many churches quickly joined the effort, including Central Global Methodist Church. Here’s an overview of our phased response:

Phase 1: The Rescue

On Monday, September 29, we launched our first supply drive. By October 5, we had delivered nearly 60,000 pounds of food and water to the Flat Rock and Canton areas, preventing starvation and dehydration in these hard-hit communities. Six churches, including Central, joined forces to deliver these critical resources.

Phase 2: The Recovery

As the full extent of the devastation became clear, we began a second phase focused on those who were now homeless, living in barns, tents, and outbuildings. This phase focused on providing warm clothing and heating supplies to prevent frostbite and hypothermia as the weather grew colder. By this point, 17 churches had joined to provide aid.

Phase 3: The Reconstruction

Under the program Helping Hands, led by Central Global Methodist Church, we began the difficult task of rebuilding lives. This phase includes helping families refurnish homes or, in some cases, rebuild them entirely from scratch. Some homes are filled with feet of mud and remain without power, which may not be restored for 9 to 12 months. Central is partnering with local churches, civic groups, and individuals to sponsor vetted families who might otherwise receive no assistance. To date, we have identified five families in urgent need of this support. With insurance companies denying coverage due to a lack of flood insurance, churches have stepped up to provide the necessary funds and supplies. Donations are pouring in from across the country, and Central’s office has been inundated with calls from those eager to help.

Project Santa

In partnership with First Baptist Church in Denton, Project Santa is making sure that children displaced by the hurricane will have a Christmas. Generous donations from across the U.S. have fully funded this initiative, and local teachers are volunteering to shop for the children to bring a bit of holiday joy in these challenging times.
